Events
Celebrate the magic of the holidays on December 18 and 19 with Harmony Productions as they present in concert, Sweet Thing from 10 p.m. to midnight at Satan's Den, 839 S. Arlington in Akron. Sweet Thing is comprised of three Cleveland area women who will perform easy listening music. From midnight to 2 a.m., Freedom, Express will feature music ranging from Top 40 to disco. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $2.00.
The Cleveland Women's Open House collective is pleased to announce that we have found a permanent, non-residential space to hold our monthly coffeehouses. Our new location will be 2728 Lancashire in Cleveland Heights, off Coventry between Mayfield and Euclid Heights Boulevard. The building is across from the Musicians Tower and parking is available.
Our featured performer for the Saturday, December 26, Open House is. Peggi Cella, a very talented singer-songwriter who accompanies herself on piano and guitar. Peggi has performed at many political gatherings in the Cleveland area, and she appeared as the opening act for the Kristin Lems concert at Cleveland State last December.
The Open House will continue serving our selection of coffee, herb and black teas, juice and snacks. We are open on the 4th Saturday of each month from 8 to 12 with music beginning at 9 p.m. The Open House is chemical-free and non-profit; a $1.50 donation is requested for the music and the rent.
We want to thank the women who helped make our Open House evenings possible by donating their homes to us this past year. Come join us December 26 at our new home for an evening of good music and good company. All women are welcome. For more information, call 371-0483.
L.I.G.H.T. will be sponsoring a New Year's Eve Party, for women only, at 3130 Mayfield Road. Deb Adler will perform at 9:00 p.m., disco at 10:00 p.m. Buffet starts at 11:00 p.m. with complimentary champagne at midnight. Cash bar throughout the evening. More details next month.
Harmony Productions, a new women's production company formed by Romaine Reeves and Marcia (Swamp) Sindelar, will sponsor a womenonly New Year's Eve Gala and musical benefit to promote the new company, with good music and dancing, quality food and a pleasant romantic environment for all.
Romaine has helped organize women's community activities, such as the WomenSpace Media Marathon and Peabody's Benefit Night, and believes that the women's community of northeastern Ohio should have more social events of their own. Swamp has acquired eighteen years' experience as a professional musician/entertainer, including performance with "Fox" and "Babe". She brings considerable technical expertise to the Harmony Productions team. Harmony plans to promote a variety of activities in the future, all focused on the social needs of women who desire well-organized quality events.
Susan B. Anthony, Ph.D., grandniece of the "Mother of Suffrage," will speak on "Women and Alcohol, A Holistic Approach," at noon on January 14, 1982, CSU University Center Auditorium, E. 22nd and Euclid. Dr. Anthony was named to receive the torch that opened the Natlonal Women's Conference in Houston in 1977. In 1978 she was appointed women's representative to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism National Plan of Action steering group. The Reproductive Freedom Coalition will hold a fund-raising dinner January 18 at Earth by April to commemorate the Supreme Court abortion decision. An evening of Growth and Networking will be held on January 19 at 6:30 p.m. at WomenSpace, 1258 Euclid Avenue. This will be an opportunity for women interested in becoming involved in a feminist awareness group to share ideas and plan a group best suited to their interests and needs. A National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights I will be held on Sunday, May 2, 1982. The demands of the March are to stop the Family Protection Act. pass the National Gay Rights Bill, stop the discriminatory immigration policy against lesbian and gays, and pass S.157 to allow Zenaida Rebultan, a Filipino Lesbian, to immigrate to the U.S. A major lobbying effort is also being planned to coincide with the march. The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland is looking for physicians, nurse-practitioners, physician's assistants, or midwives to volunteer one evening (3 hours) per week to assist us in serving our female patient population. Professionals are needed to provide physical exams for women wishing to obtain birth control methods, pregnancy testing, or testing and treatment of vaginal infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
